London’s Most Beautiful Libraries

A library is the delivery room for the birth of ideas, a place where history comes to life.

Nothing screams romance like a passionate love story. For centuries people have been telling tales and novels like Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Far from the Madding Crowd are some of the finest examples of love in literature. Libraries are often a place for contemplation, learning and relaxation, but they can also be used as unique event spaces – perfect for those book lovers! At The Events Mill we recognise the importance of finding unique and stylish venues that offer something special for our clients. London is full of wonderful hidden gems, including many libraries that can accommodate intimate events.

The Octagon – Queen Mary University of London

Situated in east London, Queen Mary University’s former library is one of pure charm and decadence. Built in 1887 the original coloured books still grace the bookshelves and complement the unique design of the Octagon shaped building. A wide variety of events can be held here including wedding receptions where guests can choose from a fork buffet or sit down dinner themed on the library’s association with many famous writers. Licensed for weddings, this venue can accommodate numbers from 50 to 220 people. Boasting a stunning dome this brightly coloured room is a book worm’s paradise and an event professional’s dream come true!

Gladstone Library – One Whitehall Place

Built as a London base for the liberal party in 1884 on the site of the original palace that was burnt in the Great Fire of London, this library is famous for its central location. The Gladstone Library has a traditional interior with wall to ceiling covered books in earthy tones. Adjacent to Downing Street, the building itself houses an array of political and historical books and has an impressive history – it was even used by the secret service during World War Two. Adjacent to the Royal Horseguards Hotel this large space can accommodate up to 300 people theatre style, adorned with striking pillars and beautiful chandeliers, which makes this the ultimate venue of historical elegance.

Wolfson Library Suite

Part of the Royal Society, and home to the National Science Academy, this multi-functional space is perfect for any event. Accommodating events for 10 to 800 people, and restored to its former ornate glory with sculptures surrounding the doors and windows, it is the perfect space for a wedding or exclusive event experience. Boasting an enviable postcode and overlooking the Mall and St James’s Park this venue is one not to be missed.

The Cinnamon Club

Licensed to host civil ceremonies, this Grade II listed building is one that is steeped in tradition. Housed in the original Westminster Library, the old and new are mixed in stunning contrast. Cocktails and books go hand in hand at this very stylish venue. Think Alan Fleming’s James Bond meets Charles Dickens! Indian cuisine takes on a modern twist at the aptly named Cinnamon Club, with a hint of British flair. The Library bar can accommodate between 24 and 50 people or alternatively the entire venue is available for 130 to 350 people. Stuffed with colourful books, and light towering ceilings and pillars this venue is the ultimate in unique design for any literary lover.

The Library – Royal Institution Venue

Situated on Albermarle Street moments from hotels such as Browns and The Ritz, this London space is one to rival all others. Containing a large collection of scientific books this room could inspire any science enthusiast and novice alike. However given its stunning décor, beautiful chandeliers and large bay windows, this Georgian library is less Big Bang Theory and more Jane Austin. The mirror over the fireplace has even been hanging there since 1805 – an interesting fact for any party guests! The space itself is small, only accommodating between 40 and 70 people, but it is the perfect addition to some of the larger rooms in the house or ideal for a more intimate affair. With terrace and garden this venue is a real hit.

Library at St. Martin’s Lane is a modern take on the more traditional library and situated within walking distance to Covent Garden. This striking private members club houses a wide array of events from fashion shows to product launches and dinner parties. Books of all shapes, sizes and colours are crammed into boxes that line the walls of this stunningly quirky venue and mismatched furniture graces the space for that very en trend feel. Capacities vary from 15 to 100 people depending on your preferred area and accommodation is on-site for guests wishing to stay overnight. This is the perfect venue for anyone looking for a modern twist on tradition.
